East Ruston in renowned for its “common” which is actually an area of land administered by the Trustees of The East Ruston Poors Allotments.

In total there are about 300 acres which were left in trust as a result of the Enclosures Act 1810 to provide for the poor and needy of the village.

The land is divided between arable, grazing, open fen and lakes.

Although the land is private, and a charity, the villagers and general public are allowed free access to the open land providing normal courtesies are observed.

Included in “The Poors Allotments” are two man-made lakes to encourage wildfowl.
